SATURDAY SHOPPING ♥ JARED GOLD SHOP

Jared Gold was/is a master. He was  a child prodigy (with the piano) and then when he was at Otis, he won the Rudi Gernreich scholarship....a boon to anyone aspiring to become a fashion designer. I was exposed to his designs at a very crazy nuclear shop in the lower or upper Haight in San Francisco. I can't even remember the name of the store (Walter will...?), but they carried a lot of amazing pieces by up-n-coming and unknown fashion creators. One of them being Jared. There was a rack, and it had some velvet little girl tops with puffy sleeves. Mind you, this is the FIRST TIME I had seen a puffy sleeve on a top since I was about 7. I still have that top...the peach puffy sleeve stretch velvet top with the embroidered bunny head logo. Jared was blowing up...and then...he renounced all the bullshit the fashion industry dishes out to young geniuses. He renounced all the bullshitters and all the you-must's and all the rules. He literally picked up and moved to Salt Lake City (Utah)...and now he just does what he wants to. I lost touch with him years ago, but I did check out his site because he is one of those Halloween-y designers....meaning, I do think about him when I think about designers who embrace those creepy things about Halloween. And he does have some interesting things for sale on his site...see below. :) ♡

Ornamental Starwort Candle
Once thought to be a common tundra grass with burred seedpods, it actually a parasite caused by atmospheric phenomenon enabled by the unique conditions present only in the Ustyurt Plateau in Uzbekistan. High-pressure systems cause intense winds and force pollens and other biomatter into felted clumps that adhere to long grasses. The acids and moisture destroy the host grasses while releasing an intoxicating scented dust, reminiscent of white patchouli, cocoa, cardamom, and black pepper.

Deadly Kittenshade Candle
This strange species is indigenous to the haunted forests of the Transylvanian Alps running halfway through Romania. It was once believed that witches, to lure children into the woods, bred this plant.  The delicious scent would carry for miles when in bloom.  The seed tufts are fluffy and look remarkable like kittens, however if the pods come into contact with skin they cause a paralysis known as “fairy sleep. The plants blooms and releases a pink fog scented with wild strawberries, currants and candyfloss.

African Stranglethorn Candle
This noxious sounding plant actually has a very endearing personality. A distant and demented variant of family gleditsia triancanthos, the African stranglethorn is used by lowland dwellers to armor their huts against Lions.   The vine attaches to the natural clay used to build the dwellings and leaves the outside of the hut spiky and impenetrable, while the inside stays cool and dreamily scented. The vine’s calming aroma has whisps of crunchy quince, gooseberry, Kefir lime, and lush, grassy spikenard.

Candywood
These trees grow in communal clusters along the Tallapoosa River in closed lagoons. This central Alabama location has long since been the home of the legendary will o’ the wisp or swamp lights.  Until recently this paranormal phenomenon has been unexplainable due to the impenetrable density of the swamps. However, recently discovered candywood clusters have explained the lights in the darkest swamps at night; the trees incandesce. The trees release a sap that when excited by moisture glows in a variation of colors, like earthbound northern lights. Insects are drawn to the glowing and help pollinate the trees at night.  The sap has a very distinctive scent with gorgeous notes of ginger, mimosa, orange blossoms, with a tinge of peaches.

(FREAK) FILM FRIDAY ♥ PIG DEATH MACHINE!

I was stoked to hear that two of my favorite freaks (and creators) Amy Davis and Jon Moritsugu (see the previous post I did on their album LOW ON HIGH and read about them here ) had just wrapped up a new film...a horror film...just in time for my Halloween week of posts. Of course it's pure and awesome and there's loads of style seeping out from every corner of it. They can't help it...it just comes naturally to everything they do. They're masters at everything they tackle. And sweethearts, too. I got to ask them a couple of questions about the film. They sent over another teaser as well as some awesome stylee STYLEE stills from the film....check it out YO:

GLAMOUR SHOT of APATHY PRODUCTIONS KING JON + QUEEN AMY
CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THIS FILM IS ABOUT?
PIG DEATH MACHINE stars AMY DAVIS as COCOJOY, a dumb-as-a-doornail brunette who eats a mysterious substance (ok, ok... weird old tainted meat) and is transformed into a real genius with all the trimmings.  Punk Rock Goddess HANNAH LEVBARG (of the band VENUS BOGARDUS) plays LIPTON, a gardening freak who eats the same stuff and gains the ability to talk to plants. All of the initial excitement slowly turns into horror as each character sinks deeper and deeper from her "ultimate fantasy" into her "ultimate nightmare."

Tucker Bennet is a new star in our APATHY Crown. He plays HOTPANTS...Lipton's work mate.

PIG DEATH MACHINE was shot by TODD VEROW in August 2010 who also shot MOD FUCK EXPLOSION and TERMINAL USA. So it'll have that pastel candy-colored sweetness of those, albeit in DV.

AMY DAVIS and VICTOR OF AQUITAINE in the FIGHT SCENE.
VEROW SHOOTS DAVIS ON THE GARSON STUDIOS BLUE SCREEN (they just shot COWBOYS and ALIENS here as well as NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN!)
WHY A HORROR FILM THIS TIME AROUND?
Horror is a genre that the two of us have always wanted to tackle... and until now, we didn't feel ready or interested. Of course, PIG DEATH MACHINE won't be the typical slash/burn/ghost/lingerie boobie-with-nightvision horror flick...it's leanin' more towards the psychological terror/screwball side of life with teeny tiny boobies all wrapped up in glitter pasties and porky pig motifs so it doesn't rally count. You'll be laughing while your super-ego slowly screams. Panic-inducing soundtrack will be provided by MONTE CAZAZZA, godfather of industrial music. Also in talks with Alec Empire of ATR. We wanted to see if we could make people afraid...afraid of their deepest desires and perhaps wary of such an  acidic envy tinged  mode of thinking/dreaming/wanting. Plus lotsa BIG BANGS+BOOMS plus BONUS>>> HOT CUTE COUTURE...WAHOOOO!!!!

UM...LIKE HELLO...AMAZING DRESS. AMY JUST KNOWS HOW TO KILL IT. IT'S ALSO REALLY FUN TO TALK FASHION AND MAKEUP WITH HER.
AMY as COCOJOY
AMY as COCOJOY
look at all the rad looks Amy wears as Cocojoy in this film...she's insane! in a good way, of course...just click on the image to make it bigger.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE SEE IT AND WHEN?
We're projecting completion in spring of 2011, so look for it at festivals, theaters, screenings spaces, the works. Of course, we'll also have it out on DVD and all over the Internet PLUS we shot a MAKING OF DOC called PIGGYWOOD which will be out at the same time. As for now, we're just starting post-production and the footage is freakin' AMAZING, the actors all ROCK, and the southwest landscape looks ominously edible. Amy is all METHOD now for real and it is so crazy cool how deep she gets.

To help cover POST expenses like editing and sound-design, we're fundraising kickstarter stylee:

JON, TODD and ART DEPT JASON DEBOER set up desert FIGHT scene.
(L to R) THE CHILEAN, CHERRI JUBILEE, CHIVO BLANCO, JAMES DEGENERATION
HANNAH LEVBARG as LIPTON
WHAT ARE YOU GUYS WORKING ON NEXT?
At APATHY PRODUCTIONS, we are already brainstormin' our next project! Lotsa late night meetings trying to figure out the direction we're gonna take. We do know the new movie will be something bigger, more emphasis on costumes and period, mise-en-scene, maybe shot on a soundstage. But then again, we might do a rom-com....NOT!!! Hopefully we'll be shootin' something in the next year or so. It waffles between WASHED UP POP STAR  and a WESTERN  MEAN COWGIRLS... In the meantime, our band LOW ON HIGH is back in the studio workin' on a much HEAVIER follow-up album. Also planned... puppy doggie....we need fuzzy cuteness and..uh...sanity.♡

SHOE ME THURSDAY ♥ SKELETON SHOES!

These were the most amazing shoes to showcase for Halloween week. I'm not a fan of DSquared. It's just not my thing. And I think the mirror twins are kind of...weird. Like, why would you want to be exactly like your twin...as an adult? It's too gimmick for me. But, these are pretty cool. I'm not gonna lie. Super rad post tomorrow for Halloweeeen!♡

WICKED WEDNESDAY ♥ MONSTER FASHION!

FIRST...HIT PLAY....THEN READ....

A while ago I was hanging out with one of my good friends, amazing artist/horror aficionado/comic book master/knower-of-all-things-stranger-than-I-could-ever-know, D.W. Frydendall. He's done a lot of amazing things: the Haunted Mansion comic with Slave Labor Graphics for Disney,  an interactive graphic novel and game for The Butterfinger Defense League campaign that recently launched (with Erik Estrada, the real Hulk--Lou Ferrigno--and Sir Mix-A-Lot...all together...yep!), as well as tons of artwork for bands across the music spectrum including Punk, Hip-Hop, Rock, Metal ,  Rockabilly/Psychobilly, even Classical.

After some chatter (and Whiskey) we came up with something for Halloween. Halloween is D.W.'s holiday. So below are some amazing first pieces in what could turn out to be a series, if he ever gets the time and if I get him some more fashion to do. We give you....

TUESDAY TAILOR ♥ ELEY KISHIMOTO WINTER!

I wanted to run this video (a lot of videos this week....true) because it shows the current collection for Eley Kishimoto that you can go out and buy and wear now...and I love that. PLUS it's a video from Russian Fashion Week...which is so cool. I have a big meeting tomorrow, so I best get to sleep. I hope you enjoy the show...I love Eley Kishimoto (duh). And a lot of the pieces later in the video are sweet! PS There's a Halloween treat tomorrow...that you will want to pass around.♡

MAKEUP MONDAY ♥ ZACH HILL'S NAIL SALON

This isn't actually a makeup video...per se. It's a music video for ZACH HILL's "The Primitives Talk" (from the album Face Tat that came out on the 19th). But it's really clever in that its focus is the nail salon, and more than that, those strange posters they usually have in most nail salons. You know...the ones with the hands painted all crazy, holding a rose with droplets on the pedals. In the novel that I'll be releasing as soon as the cover art is done, I do touch on these strange posters. (In my novel.) So I got the joke. But there also some cool ideas for nail design in here, too. Especially the Mondrian-painted nails. Check it out at the end. The tune is pretty good, too. It reminds me of the kids in Portland.♡

♥ SUNDAY MATINEE ♥ PETRA CORTRIGHT SPARKLE 1 AND 2 ♥

Here are your instructions:
Turn up the volume and/or put your headphones on.
Hit play on both videos so they run at the same time...
so you watch them both at the same time. Got it? Now...GO!

I met Petra in Portland (and look forward to working with her in the future). She's what a lot of people call an "Internet artist". But I think she's a lot more than that. And though I love some of her work and don't understand some of her other work, this is pure genius. And it's suuuuper pretty, too. I think this piece (this is a diptych, people) is just magical.♡

SATURDAY SHOPPING ♥ SECRET PERFUME

OK. I admit it. There are a few things that I've loved that I never write about and I don't go sharing it with the world, either (meaning, my friends). There are some things that I like not being on everyone's mind. But these days keeping secrets is getting harder and harder. And, honestly, it's not that I don't want people to know about the goods. It's just been that, well, with the perfume I wear...I'd rather not have everyone I know also wearing the exact same scent. But I'm giving that secret away here. For about 10 years or just over, I've been wearing COMPTOIR SUD PACIFIQUE in Vanille Abricot (which is like vanilla apricot scented...) and I've gotten so so so so many comments about it. Extremely good comments. I think the best comments have always been from taxi/cab drivers....They'll either start with something like, "I smell something good like...cotton candy or something baking...." or they'll just get quiet and then slowly turn around and politely ask, "I don't want to sound weird, but whatever you're wearing smells amazing...". I discovered it in small posh boutique in LA back then when a girlfriend of mine was working there. Vanilla has always been one of my favorite smells and tastes. And colors. And Comptoir Sud Pacifique used to have like five different vanilla variations. They still have quite  few. They still make Vanilla Abricot (which I have, but it's slowly running out). I also have Vanille Banane which is like vanilla banana and is quite sweet smelling...in a very good addictive way. But it's stronger than the Vanille Abricot. I also have a scent that is, I think as of now, discontinued that smells like sweetened condensed milk. It's very soft and subtle. And then some PR girls I was doing business with said they had taken the account on and sent me a new scent...Vanille Extreme. Its key notes are all vanilla pod. But I think my nose is off or something because I can't smell what I read it's supposed to smell like. Vanille Extreme is sold out until November! So it must be amazing.

These perfumes, like any good perfume, are not cheap. And, like any good perfume, they're made in France. There are so many great smells to choose from. They're magic in a bottle. And I'm sharing it with everyone who reads my blog. I wish there was a way to smell the fragrances through the computer. In the meantime, maybe you can find a place that sells them and go smell them for yourself. I'm still a Vanille Abricot girl. But I'm going to give the Vanille Extreme a go. Since it's totally out, it must be really good. ♡
